Findings of a clinical study published in the European Heart Journal state that the hunger hormone ghrelin can improve the hearts capacity to pump blood in heart failure patients.

According to experts, heart failure is the most prevalent reason for hospitalization in older generations and is linked to a low quality of life and a high mortality rate.

The cardiac muscle tissues have several ghrelin receptors, which are endogenous hormones. The Scientists think that increasing the heart′s ability to pump blood through its receptors is a good goal. It boosts the release of growth hormones and enhances hunger.

In this double-blind trial, 30 heart failure patients were randomly divided into two groups and given active treatment with ghrelin or a placebo intravenously for two hours. After two to five days, the subjects were followed up with.

Study results showed that after two hours, the cardiac output rose by 28% in of ghrelin group, compared to a placebo group. Also, the pump capacity in the ghrelin group was 10% greater than in the placebo group at the two- to five-day follow-up.

The researchers found no significant adverse effects, but higher levels of a biomarker for heart failure were found in the ghrelin group for unknown reasons. Hence more research is required to see whether there is any real connection
